Ethnicity and Migration Collections
Incorporating the Sivanandan Collection of the Institute of Race Relations and the Collection of the Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations.
The Ethnicity and Migration Collections are the combined collections of the Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations and the Institute of Race Relations (IRR).
These Collections are major research resources for the study of race and ethnic relations. Spanning the mid-1960s to the present, the Collections have a UK and international focus.
The CRER collection was initially created to support research and postgraduate teaching at the Centre. Built up over nearly 20 years (from the mid-1980s onwards), it represents a unique collection of primarily British non-book materials covering a wide range of issues in ethnic relations. The Sivanandan collection was donated to the University in 2006. Previously hosted by the IRR library, it primarily contains material from the 1960s and 1970s.
The Collections provide access to a wealth of grey literature on the subject of ethnic relations including pamphlets and reports, periodicals such as New Community and Ethnic Minorities Health, newspaper titles such as The Voice, Caribbean Times and Q-News and press cuttings. Located on the fifth floor of the University Library, the collections are available to the public for reference use during Library opening hours. Parts of the CRER collection are in the Modern Records Centre. Click here for directions to the University and campus maps.
Most of the holdings are in the University Library catalogue and can be searched for by choosing "Ethnicity & Migration" or "Sivanandan Collection" from the drop down list on the right. Books are available for loan, and the rest of the collection is for reference use in the Library.
