Education and the Climate Emergency- reimagining our future, together!

Session Description:

The climate emergency is the defining problem of our time. As educators we have a front and centre position in supporting the future generation to take informed actions to build a more sustainable future, together. The keynote will explore the work being carried out at the University of Reading in supporting this vital work. Delegates will take away some key messages and emerging ideas in the field to support their own practice in the future.

Session Title:The stories we tell about climate change: environmental children’s literature.

Session Presenter: Anna Donnelly

Session description: Anna is an experienced teacher and leader in Primary Education and is a passionate advocate for the power of children's literature in all forms. She is currently engaged in research that explores environmental children's literature and how it is experienced by children.

Session description: 

We all know that connecting with the natural world is ‘good’ for us, and for children. But what does that actually mean? Lucy Jones, author of Losing Eden, will present the most compelling and exciting research which shows why our minds - and particularly the minds of our youngest - need the wild.

Session Title: Communicating climate change to children 

Session Speaker: Callum Winter

Session description:  

What is the best way for teachers to approach the topic of climate change without increasing feelings of climate anxiety? In this presentation, Callum, a teacher of Geography at Barr’s Hill School in Coventry, will address the question and give further insight into how children perceive climate change.

Session title: OUT THERE: why we need nature, every day. 

Session presenter: Viv Rowdon

Session description: 

Viv has been working in education for 19 years and teaching outdoors for 11 years. She currently works as a facilitator, project manager, Forest School Leader and trainer for The Garden Classroom (TGC), London and is passionate about the value of learning in nature. In this interactive session she will be exploring practical approaches to learning in nature and how it inspires holistic development of all learners.

Session title: A personal journey with climate education 

Session Presenter: Kathryn Jones

Session outline:  

Kathryn is a teacher of History at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School in Birmingham and currently studying on the MA in Professional Education at Warwick. In this session, she shares personal insights gained from teaching climate justice in the history classroom and offers strategies for creating resources and conducting research in the field of climate change education.

Session title: Climate change through our eyes 

Session Presenters: Pupils from Barr’s Hill School

Session description: 

Pupils from Year 7, 10 and 12 at Barr’s Hill School in Coventry will reflect upon their first-hand experience of climate change education. Taking ten minutes each, they will share thoughts, opinions and feelings about growing up in a world with climate change and discussing the impact of climate education on their lives.
