Course overview

The Postgraduate Award in Mentoring at the Centre for Teacher Education can be completed as both a stand-alone award and as an opportunity to be entered for assessment for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Education. Through successful completion of the certificate, the programme also provides a pathway onto the 90 credit MA Professional Education.

The programme begins in either January or June with an information afternoon/evening. You will then be assigned a PG Award mentor and will be invited to meet with them (online) to agree an action plan of how you will ensure that your portfolio for the PG Award module (see below) meets the assessment requirements. You will also attend an online academic study skills session.

The opportunity of a second meeting with your PG Award mentor will be offered later in the term before the submission deadline.

During the programme you will have access to support and resources (including the library catalogue) via a dedicated Moodle page.

This course has been assigned to English Language Test A and B.

Please also see our Accepted English language Tests page for details of the English Language tests approved by the University for entry to postgraduate courses.

How you will be assessed

At your action plan meeting with your PG Award mentor you will agree what aspects of your work-based prior learning you will focus your portfolios on.

The format of an academic statement is tailored to the experience of the student in discussion with the PG Award mentor. If recent (unaccredited) professional development has included writing at length, then the quality of these will be assessed, and a short reflective piece may be all that is required. The academic statement may involve one or more of the following:

  • An annotated bibliography of a selection of recent journal articles.
  • A critical comparison of two texts that are relevant to the professional context.
  • A critical review of a longer educational text.
  • A rationale for why the academic texts have been chosen and how they relate to professional experience.
  • A re-ective account of how prior professional learning relates to the teacher’s reading.
