Moderation Visits - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the moderated lesson observation?

To ensure that assessments made on a weekly basis, which inform the assessment profiles, are accurate, realistic and follow the Warwick Assessment Descriptors (WADs).

How many of these take place across the year?

For Core trainees there are three moderated lessons across the two placements.

Does the trainee need to teach the full lesson?

Yes, the trainee is expected to be capable of teaching the whole lesson.

Does the lesson have to be from the subject mentor’s timetable?

No, however the subject mentor has to be the member of staff who observes and assesses the lesson.

Can a class teacher be the observer and assessor of the lesson?

No, it must be the subject mentor.

Can the professional mentor be the observer and assessor of the lesson?

Yes, the moderation tutor will accept observing and assessing with the professional mentor and will occasionally request for this to be the case.

Is the subject mentor required after the lesson observation?

Yes, the subject mentor is required for a meeting for approximately 60 minutes immediately after the lesson to lead the feedback and mentor trainee meeting.

Does the meeting have to take place immediately after the lesson?

Yes, if possible as the moderation tutor may have another observation to go to, arranged on the same day. It is ok, with notice, to make it up to an hour later if a lesson needs to be taught by the subject mentor immediately following the observation.

Will the subject mentor be given feedback by the moderation tutor?

Yes, the moderation tutor will discuss the assessment of the trainee to ensure the subject mentor and moderation tutor assessments align.

What happens to the lesson observation paperwork?

The subject mentor shares the lesson observation paperwork with the moderation tutor and trainee and the trainee uploads this to their PDP.
