Introduction to Secondary School Teaching - Chemistry

The Warwick in Schools programme is an experience programme linked to “Introduction to teaching…” optional modules offered by the Centre for Teacher Education (CTE). For 2017/18 the following modules are available:

• Biology
• Chemistry
• Drama & Theatre Studies
• Languages
• Mathematics
• Physics
• Primary Teaching

Module Seminars & Workshops

Teaching takes place during Term 2 and consists of seven weekly seminars and eight weekly twilight workshops, all supported by a Moodle course. The seminars are taught by academic staff from the Centre for Teacher Education and explore themes such as the National Curriculum, the pedagogy of teaching your subject, assessment for learning, and current issues in teaching and education. The workshops are taught by expert teachers from local schools with a focus on providing strategies and techniques to support you with your practice in schools and deal with areas such as dealing with behaviour in class and how to ask plan engaging sessions.

Sessions for Chemistry are as follows :

- Seminars - Tuesdays 5.00 - 7.00pm

- Workshops - Wednesdays 5.30 - 7.30pm

These will take place on Westwood Campus. Rooms will be shared with students upon registration to the module.

Placement

Over the course of the module you will complete a ten day placement in the relevant department of a local school arranged for you by the Warwick in Schools team. Typically students attend the placement school for half a day per week during Term 2 and then for six full days whilst the university is on Easter vacation and schools are still open – however this model is flexible to your timetable needs.

In school you will be assigned an experienced teacher who will act as your mentor who will put together a timetable for you and organise and support you with activities linked to teaching your subject which could include: - lesson observations, supporting lessons, 1 to 1 teaching, small group teaching, and leading part of, or even entire lessons.
You will require a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check in order to begin your placement in school. This will be organised and paid for by the Centre for Teacher Education.

Assessment

All WinS modules are assessed completely by coursework and will require you to write in the academic style for the discipline of Education. There are opportunities to submit work for feedback and comment prior to final submission for assessment. It is appreciated that this is a second discipline for the majority of students and so there is some support provided within seminars for academic writing along with additional support available on Moodle and in weekly office hours.

Assessment for Chemistry:

- Assignment 1: Portfolio of Tasks (5x 500 word tasks) – 50% weighting
- Assignment 2: Reflective Essay (1500 words) – 50% weighting

To support your development there will be opportunity to submit two portfolio tasks for feedback and comments prior to final submission.
