Keynote
The Keynote speaker was Professor Mike Sharples from the Open University. He talked about designs for learning focussing on four different types of pedagogy that can be used to support active learning. A copy of his presentation is available on Slide Share: https://www.slideshare.net/sharplem/designs-for-active-learning-cambridge-2017-79690448
Mike referred to a blog post by Paul A. Kirschner and Mirjam Neelen called Learning the smart way: https://3starlearningexperiences.wordpress.com/tag/ineffective-learning-strategies/ which is actually quite funny (and short too!) He also talked about the Innovating Pedagogy report that the OU undertook: http://www.open.ac.uk/blogs/innovating/ which as he comments is a never ending process as there are always different pedagogies to consider. Four key pedagogies from this review were chosen: Explore first, Spaced learning, Conversational learning and Learning design and analytics. Mike gave case study examples of how different institutions had implemented these pedagogies and the impact they had on student satisfaction and learning. He also talked about mixing different types of learning within lessons to encourage active learning i.e. assimilative, finding information, communicative, productive, experiential, interactive and assessment and how the results might not be as expected.
