Session Title:

Promoting resilience in teacher training

Abstract/Brief Summary:

Teaching is a rewarding and exciting career. However, like most other occupations, it can be stressful at times. Past research found that 97% of teachers are stressed, with 50% of newly qualified teachers (NQT) choosing to leave the profession in the first five years. Resilience has been found to buffer against stress, anxiety, and depression. However, the psychology behind resilience in trainee and NQTs remains unclear, which limits the development of resilience targeted intervention.

The aim of my PhD is to explore the underlying mechanisms of resilience in trainee and NQTs and to develop a novel online resilience boosting programme. The presentation will first begin with an overview of resilience and stress. Then, I will share the key factors that I have found to be associated with trainees' resilience levels. Lastly, I will share the new online resilience training that I have developed to help trainee teachers bolster resilience to the stresses of teacher training. Other easy and accessible practices that are also beneficial in well-being will be also discussed.

Trainee teachers will have the opportunity to try out some cognitive functioning exercises with me, as well as engage in some positive psychology practices. Trainee teachers who are training to become a primary or secondary teacher are all welcomed to join this engaging session.
