Local Towns and Cities
The University of Warwick is placed in between a few towns and cities, each with their own charms.
Birmingham
If you’re looking for a big city, why not get a train into Birmingham?
From Canley Train Station you can get to Birmingham New Street in just 25 minutes. Birmingham is the 2nd largest city in the UK. It is often called the 'Second City' and has an incredible variety of activities. Birmingham is one of the biggest shopping hubs in the country thanks to its illustrious high street and the famous Bullring Shopping Centre.
There are also plenty of museums such as the Art Gallery, Think Tank, Pen Museum, Back-to-Back Housing Museum, West Midlands Police Museum, the Pickled Gallery and many more! While you’re there, be sure to check out the iconic Library of Birmingham in all its glory.
The city also has a huge number of options when it comes to nightlife. There are bars and clubs scattered across the city, but the Broad Street strip is where you’ll find the most bars in one convenient location.
Coventry
If you’re looking for a city full of life which isn’t as big or busy as Birmingham, then Coventry is the place to be. The winner of the City of Culture award for 2021, this vibrant and historic city is just a 3-minute journey from Canley on the train. It is also accessible via bus, which there are plenty of from the University, making it easy to get to.
The cathedral is a must-see for all visitors. The Transport Museum and Music Museum are great visits, and there are plenty of options for bites to eat. The nightlife is booming, and being so close to the University means taxis are fast and not too expensive. You also have bowling, cinema and ice skating right on the doorstep.
Royal Leamington Spa
Royal Leamington Spa, or sometimes just referred to as Leamington, is a spa town south of the University. Here, you will find a town which combines a treasure-trove of independent, specialist boutiques alongside high street brands and a huge variety of eating experiences. The town is steeped in history with its roots as a spa town, and its gorgeous Victorian architecture blends with the beautiful nature walks and parks along the river.
Warwick
Although the University takes this town’s name, the University is in fact based in an area of Coventry. But the town of Warwick has its own charms away from the University. The historic town is famous for its magnificent castle, superb specialist and independent shops, historic charm, and a fantastic range of places to eat & drink. Warwick Castle is one of the best castles in the whole country, and the town will take you back in time with its well-kept ancient architecture.
Other local areas
There are plenty of honourable mentions worth visiting, including the market town of Rugby, home of the sport which took the town’s namesake, there is plenty to see including the Webb Ellis Museum, Rugby School and Museum, Art Gallery, and Caldecott Park. There is also the town of Kenilworth. This small town hosts a marvellous castle which overlooks the stunning views of Abbey Fields.
