Tips on Applying for Further Study at Warwick
Tips on Applying for Further Study at Warwick
Alumnus Milan Makany gives his advice on applying to an MSc course in Economics at Warwick.
1. Why did you choose this MSc course at Warwick?
I have long had an ambition to pursue an academic career in Economics and doing an MSc was the clear next step after completing my BSc. I chose to stay at Warwick because of the excellent faculty and the fantastic experience I had during my Undergraduate years at the Department.
2. Have you got any advice on how to make a successful application to Warwick?
My advice to prospective MSc students would be to familiarise themselves with the curriculum and faculty of their target universities. I would also suggest clearly defining what you expect to gain from pursuing a postgraduate degree. This helps greatly in deciding on which institutions are the best fit for you. Since the degree will most certainly involve a dissertation component, I would suggest identifying members of the faculty that could potentially supervise your research project.
I would also suggest that you start preparing your application package over the summer holidays so that you do not miss deadlines as some competitive programmes may close applications as early as December. Your application package will also include a Statement of Purpose, which should detail your motivation for applying to a specific programme, and why your qualifications and experience make you a suitable candidate.
What is your advice for getting a good academic reference?
A key aspect of your application will be your reference letters. I would suggest signalling your intentions to pursue an MSc to your personal tutor, as they will be able to provide you with the strongest reference. They may also be helpful with choosing a programme that is suitable for your ambitions. Make sure to ask all your prospective letter writers well in advance whether they would be available to supply you with a reference, and make sure to be explicit about your application deadlines.
