I work as a Senior Careers Consultant in Student Opportunity and I am also the link Careers Consultant for the Department of Economics. The aspect of my work that I most enjoy is working in collaboration with students to help them make decisions about their career thinking.

On several days each week students from Economics can book 1:1 appointments. For those of you reading this who haven’t experienced a careers guidance appointment before, this is an opportunity to explore ideas with a qualified careers professional who can help you to clarify your thoughts, ideas, knowledge, experiences and options.

My work with Economics students also includes:

• Suggesting approaches to secure internships/work experience
• Fine tuning improvements to job search strategies
• Providing specialist guidance on specific economics and finance related career areas.
• Bespoke mock interviews and provision of feedback in a safe environment to develop interview skills and confidence
• Providing strengths profile debrief meetings, particularly for students who are applying for employers using strengths based recruitment

What is your best bit of advice to give students who ask about how to choose a job area or sector which would suit them?

I’m a strong advocate of playing to your strengths, so my advice would be to ask yourself whether a job will enable you to play to your individual strengths.
