Tuesday 14 May 2013An extra hour per week on core subjects would raise educational standards, according to research by Victor Lavy featured in The Economist. That should please Mr Gove. As Japan and Germany introduce an extended school day, and many UK academies opt for 'office hours', Education Secretary Michael Gove is pushing state secondary schools to extend their teaching day and reduce holidays, in an attempt to to compete with the academic standards achieved by Asian countries.
