Chair: Gemma TetlowLink opens in a new window
Gemma Tetlow is chief economist at the Institute for Government, where she leads work on public finances and contributes to economics-related projects across the Institute. She is a regular commentator on radio, television and in print media, including BBC Radio 4, Times Radio, ITV News, Sky News and national newspapers.
Gemma holds a PhD in economics. She began her career at the Institute for Fiscal Studies before joining the Financial Times as economics correspondent. She also serves as an ONS Fellow, supporting improvements to the UK’s economic statistics, and chairs the advisory board of the Centre for the Analysis of Taxation, hosted jointly by the University of Warwick and the London School of Economics.

Emily Fry is on secondment to the Bank of England, having previously worked as senior economist at the Resolution Foundation. Her research covers productivity, trade, energy and their relationship to living standards in the UK. She has also worked in finance and academia, focusing on sustainability and net zero. Emily holds a degree in economics and management from the University of Oxford and a master’s in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School.

Liam Halligan is a British economist, journalist, author and broadcaster. He was economics and business editor at GB News from its launch in June 2021 to June 2024. Since 2003, he has written a weekly column in The Sunday Telegraph and presents The Telegraph’s Planet Normal podcast.

James HaytonLink opens in a new window
James Hayton is vice-provost and chair of social sciences at the University of Warwick, and professor of innovation at Warwick Business School. He is also a senior fellow at the Institute for the Future of Work and former dean of the Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations in the United States. His research focuses on the management of people and organisations to build capacity for innovation, entrepreneurship and strategic renewal. He teaches on these topics in the Warwick Executive MBA and executive education programmes. Author of more than 100 articles, reports and books on innovation and human resource management, he is ranked among the world’s top 2% of researchers by citation.

Tim Leunig is a prize-winning economist who has taught at the London School of Economics for 25 years and at the University of Oxford, and has held visiting faculty positions in the United States and Europe. He has worked for the UK government for more than a decade, including serving as economic adviser to two chancellors, three housing secretaries, and as chief analyst and chief scientific adviser at the Department for Education. Tim is director of Public First Consulting and an associate member of Nuffield College, Oxford. He is a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the Royal Society of Arts, and the Royal Historical Society, and is a governor of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

Dan Mawson is a senior economic adviser at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Bristol and serves as chair of the OECD Committee on Industry, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Dennis Novy is on secondment from the University of Warwick to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office as chief economist and director of analysis. He was impact director for the CAGE Research Centre from 2022 to 2025, and is a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and an associate at the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP) at the London School of Economics. Dennis holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Duncan Weldon is a writer and broadcaster. He was previously Britain economics correspondent and economics and finance correspondent at The Economist, and economics correspondent for Newsnight, the BBC’s flagship current affairs programme. He has written and presented several documentaries for BBC Radio 4, including World War Two: The Economic Battle. An economist by background, he began his career at the Bank of England before working in asset management and later as senior economist at the Trades Union Congress. He is a regular commentator on television and radio.

Andrew Oswald is professor of economics and behavioural science at the University of Warwick. He joined the university in 1996 from the London School of Economics, and previously taught at Balliol and St John’s Colleges, Oxford, and at Dartmouth and Princeton in the United States. His research focuses on quantitative social science, health economics and climate change. He serves on the board of editors of Science.

Ruth Ahnert is senior lecturer in Renaissance studies at Queen Mary University of London. Her research focuses on the literature and culture of Tudor England. She leads the Living with Machines project and co-edits Stanford University Press’s Text Technologies series.

Sara KalvalaLink opens in a new window
Sara Kalvala is associate professor (reader) in computer science at the University of Warwick. Her research focuses on computational biology and formal methods, including modelling biological systems using cellular automata, multi-agent simulations and logic-based languages, and applying compiler techniques to synthetic biology. Her work in formal methods explores verified optimising compilers and race conditions. She is a co-investigator at WISB and serves on the ACM-Women Scholarship Committee.

Ioannis Kosmidis is a senior lecturer in the Department of Statistical Science at University College London and a faculty fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science. He holds a PhD in statistics from the University of Warwick.

Sally McManus is professor of social epidemiology and director of the Violence and Society Centre at City, University of London and St George’s, University of London. She specialises in quantitative survey methods and the measurement of mental health and wellbeing. She is also a senior research fellow at the National Centre for Social Research, where she advises on England’s national mental health survey and cohort programmes.

Alex Mesoudi is associate professor of cultural evolution at the University of Exeter. His research examines human cultural evolution, applying the concepts and methods of evolutionary theory to explain cultural change.

Mike Tildesley is professor of infectious disease modelling at the University of Warwick and director of the Mathematics for Real World Systems Centre for Doctoral Training. He has advised the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on livestock disease control. He has published more than 90 papers in journals including Science, Nature and The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
