James Barty- MSc Virtual Yearbook 2022
[00.03] Hello my name is James Barty and i just wanted to leave a quick message to all of you
[00:08] successfully graduating in your Msc economics and rushing your the the best for your future careers
[00:16] and the Warwick university alumni have asked me to talk a little bit about how my Msc in economics
[00:17] I hope to be able to see you in person soon and celebrate your great achievements
[00:21] helped me through my career and what I've been able to achieve by using it I think the first
[00:25] thing i would say is that the training you get in doing the Msc in economics is incredibly useful
[00:31] university and I think I've used it in pretty much every one of my jobs and those jobs range from
[00:36] your time at work you think about how life has changed for you how you've developed
[00:41] being an economist which is where i started my career at deutsche bank through to being a
[00:46] strategist at an investment bank then working for a hedge fund working for a think tank
[00:52] where i wrote papers on the banking industry and also the Bank of England
[00:56] so yeah the tools that you get are ones that you can use all the way through your career
[01:01] and i think the embassy in economics at Warwick does provide a real springboard to
[01:07] to your jobs it gives you the discipline and the training you need obviously my first job it was
[01:12] a pretty straightforward fit because i went from doing an Msc in economics straight into uh working
[01:18] as an economist at deutsche bank i started as a UK economist and then i became a co-head of European
[01:24] economics think ahead of global economics and all the time you use that training obviously you pick
[01:29] up new things along the way but it's that training you've got whilst doing your masters that kind
[01:34] of forms the basis and then you can turn it into working in other areas so when i was a strategist
[01:40] although you have to bring in other parts and other skill sets in like valuing companies
[01:45] you still have to think about the overall macro background and then even writing papers for a
[01:50] think tank it's bringing into that analysis of economics when i was thinking about you
[01:54] know how should the bank of england be run what should you do for banking reform and
[01:59] then even in my current job now where i and director of investment strategy for the
[02:04] church commissioners and we run about a 10 billion pound fund and i look after all of the investment
[02:09] bank uh so all of the investments except real estate so i look after public equities
[02:16] credit uh bonds um money markets foreign exchange but also private equity and venture capital
[02:23] and the tools that you get from doing your Msc are useful right the way across all of those areas
[02:29] even if you might think at the beginning they're not directly useful the training is still there so
[02:35] my message to you is be confident uh if you've successfully completed your Msc you've got the
[02:41] grounding to help you go on and have a great career so the very best of luck to everybody
[02:50] you
