Economics Support and Wellbeing

[00:07] Orla (Wellbeing and Progression Officer)
Student wellbeing is fundamental to student success at university. Students need to feel that they are comfortable, that they feel that they belong in the Department and the University, and that they can study in an environment where they can speak to somebody if they feel worried about anything at all, and that we can therefore support them with their concerns. That in turn will help them with their academic success and progression. The two are very much intertwined and support each other.

Students might reach out to the Wellbeing Office if they are ill/unwell. If they have long-term health issues. There's often mental health issues that students might come to us with ... bereavement, there's all kinds of reasons why the students my turn to us. It could be an academic issue - they may come initially with some sort of academic query and we have a wider team that can help with that. We have academic members of staff on the Pastoral Team as well. Everything that students come to us with is confidential, and we try to keep it that way. The only reason why we might need to break that confidentiality is if somebody's immediate safety was of concern.

Sometimes, with mitigating circumstances, student often don't realise that they're actually experiencing them themselves, and this is because the situation that they may find themselves in - they could be for example a young carer and that's part of their everyday experience and is normal for them. However, it is important that they tell us about that because that could be impacting their university experience, their academic work and we may be able to put things in place to support them.

So, what I find most satisfying and rewarding about my role in the Department of Economics, is really interactions with students. So I regularly meet with students on a one-to-one basis and it's fantastic to be able to feel that I have somehow, in a small way, helped them to continue on with their journey and finish with a degree and successful university experience.

If a student needs support and hasn't reached out to us, what I would urge them to do is just simply get in touch we've got an economics wellbeing inbox (economics.wellbeing@warwick.ac.uk). An email, just a one-liner, is enough to just get the ball rolling. That can be easier sometimes than walking into the office which can be quite intimidating and we understand that. We're available on the phone, we're available walk-in, but sometimes an email is just that little bit easier for a student to reach out to us.
