Title: 'The limits of gender recognition and self-declaration for non-binary trans individuals'
Abstract: This presentation addresses the challenges of non-binary trans individuals within the Gender Recognition Act 2004 by offering a critique of the value of stability pursued through this legislation. It then moves on to analyse the model of self-declaration, part of the proposed reform to the GRA 2004 recently ​dismissed by the Government and suggests that while self-declaration may provide a light relief, it still does not resolve some fundamental theoretical concerns around representation and its conceptual inability to account for and respond to the challenges posed by non-binary trans individuals.
