New Book Seminar - Dr Stephen Connelly - 'Leibniz: a contribution to the archaeology of power'

- Export as iCalendar
Location: Via Zoom

‘Leibniz rather stands out in the general trends of a history of power. Whereas for Aristotle power is a limiting concept of activity, through Plotinus and Aquinas and into the early modern period power gains increasing prominence in metaphysics and in political and legal theory. Leibniz though takes power and relegates it within his metaphysical system to a limitation of finite will. Has Leibniz all but abandoned the discourse of power in a return to Aristotelean activity, or does it continue to haunt his system? I outline his various re-articulations of this problematic through his early to middle period legal theoretic works, arguing that Leibniz stands at a bifurcation point in any archaeology of power’
