The Arts Culture & Law research cluster presents Caring for Cultural Heritage

- Export as iCalendar
Location: Oculus Building, OC0.05

To celebrate the recent publication of Dr Charlotte Woodhead’s book Caring for Cultural Heritage: an Integrated Approach to Law and Ethical Initiatives in the United Kingdom, the Arts, Culture and Law research cluster are hosting an event on Caring for Cultural Heritage. Charlotte will present some of the key themes covered in her book and Professor David Gurnham (Southampton University) will respond with some observations on its links with law and humanities.

Caring for cultural heritage analyses how the care for cultural heritage is translated in UK law and non-law instruments. It analyses how communities of care assume responsibility for the care of cultural heritage because they care about it. These communities range from the international and national communities, national and local governments, courts, professional bodies, institutions such as museums to individual community groups. ‘Care’ is taken to mean the varied ways in which communities engage with cultural heritage to maintain it, sustain relationships about it and with it, use it, provide access to it and navigate harm, with a view to passing it on to future generations. By drawing on concepts from the ethics of care, Charlotte’s approach analyses the various nested practices of care in the UK which assist communities of care in providing respectful, empathetic and dialogical care to navigate harm to cultural heritage, provide the space and willingness to resolve dissonance and which facilitate the use and enjoyment of cultural heritage.

This event is free and all are welcome.
