Talk with Professor Riz Mokal
Dr Mokal's talk will explore his journey bridging legal theory and practice, corporate restructuring, and how academic research can drive real-world policy reform. This represents a valuable opportunity for students and faculty interested in law, economics, finance, development, and public policy.
Dr Riz Mokal is a leading figure at the intersection of law, economics, and international policy. He practices as a barrister at South Square Chambers in London, one of the world's premier sets specialising in insolvency and restructuring, and his scholarly work has been cited with approval by the House of Lords, the Australian High Court, and in around 150 scholarly journals worldwide. He is the author of "Corporate Insolvency Law: Theory and Application" (Oxford University Press), which constructs an egalitarian theory for analysing corporate insolvency law, reconciling fairness with economic efficiency.
From 2009 to 2013, Dr Mokal served as Senior Counsel to the World Bank and Head of the Bank's Global Initiative on Insolvency, working with the governments of eighteen countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East on legal reform. Most remarkably, his research directly influenced the 2019 EU Directive on Preventive Restructuring Frameworks, with his proposed 'creditor best interest' test and 'relative priority rule' being incorporated into this landmark legislation. He held the Chair of Law and Legal Theory at University College London until 2016 and is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Florence and an Honors joiroru.
The talk will be followed by a live Q&A. No need to sign up, just come along.
