Law School Lunchtime Research Seminar - Wednesday 30 April 2025
Guest Speaker: Dr Asuman Özgür Keysan, Atilim University
Title: 'Unvieiling the Digital Dynamics: Anti-Gender Ideology and LGBTQ+ Opposition in Contemporary Turkey'
Discussant: Nada Chaiyajit, Warwick Law School
Abstract: The anti-gender campaigns show similarities across different contexts by sharing discourses, strategies, and modes of operation among actors, and they are increasingly connected transnationally (Parnetto and Kuhar, 2018). However, the formation of these movements can vary depending on a country’s political climate, legal reforms, policies, and social fabric. Therefore, while anti-gender campaigns may not be solely local phenomena, conducting context-specific studies becomes crucial. With this in mind, the Turkish case is selected to illustrate national manifestations of anti-gender discourses on digital platforms. Employing thematic analysis, the research aims to explore how digital platforms opposing LGBTQI+ rights portray LGBTQI+ issues and how these themes strengthen anti-gender ideology in Turkey’s digital space.
