Guest Lecture: 'Racial Capitalism and the Anthropocene'

The University of Warwick Community are invited to the following Law School Lecture: 'Racial Capitalism and the Anthropocene' with Professor Carmen G. Gonzalez, Loyola University Chicago.

Racial capitalism is a useful framework for understanding the intersecting socio-ecological crises of the Anthropocene, including unprecedented environmental degradation, extreme economic inequality, and the resurgence of authoritarian ethno-nationalism. This lecture examines the logic of racial capitalism in order to distinguish between reforms that entrench the system and those that facilitate its transformation. Register to attend.

Aspire is back and exclusively for Black Heritage students to help them find their dream careers. Students will be able to speak to senior leaders and graduates of Black Heritage, who are ready to share their tips and advice. They will also develop the skills they’ll need to secure their first jobs through a series of recruiter-led workshops, and leave Aspire with the knowledge and connections they’ll need to help them on their career paths.

Policing, Culture and Community: West Midlands Police as City of Culture Partners

A webinar exploring the ways arts and culture can shift perceptions of policing. In 2019, West Midlands Police (WMP) embarked on a unique partnership with the Coventry City of Culture Trust (the Trust) in the delivery of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021. This partnership sought to enable officers to engage with arts and culture as a means of building positive community relationships, particularly amongst more vulnerable and seldom heard communities. In this webinar, we will explore the findings from our research into this partnership, and into the broader potential for police partnerships with artists and creative practitioners outside and beyond the City of Culture.

The Central and Eastern European Conference for Interdisciplinary Research (CEECIR)

CEECIR is the place where the experience of academic professionals meets the ambitions of young students. The formula of the conference combines the presentation of students' papers with keynote lectures delivered by experts in various fields. CEECIR is a unique opportunity to network with experienced academics and renowned experts. It is also a perfect occasion to develop academic writing skills and a chance for the first publication. The interdisciplinary dialogue between young scholars from different backgrounds aims to raise the awareness about the challenges in Central and Eastern Europe and create a platform for sharing valuable experience and knowledge.

The Big Read – get into costume!

Would you be interested in dressing up as a fictional character for the day or doing a dramatic reading of a children’s book as part of the Big Read? The Warwick Institute of Engagement is hosting a celebration of reading aimed at children and young people. In Warwick Arts Centre, we’re being joined by children’s authors who will be running workshops, giving talks or chatting to guests in the foyer as well as staff and students from the university with stalls and activities related to reading. To make it even better we want to bring some characters to life and that is where we need you! We are renting professionally made book character costumes and we need people to wear them and wander the Arts Centre saying hello to guests and taking photos with them.

If you’re interested please fill in this form by Sunday 12th March and list ‘The Big Read – costume’ when prompted. Travel expenses up to £10 can be reimbursed and you’ll earn a Warwick Award point.

FTB Virtual Mini Pupillage Day

Are you interested in public and administrative law, environmental law, or the legal process governing what gets built where and how? Then you may be interested in a career at the public and environmental Bar. Francis Taylor Building (FTB) is a leading London chambers, specialising in all areas of planning and environmental law. We are pleased to announce that we will be offering interested students an opportunity to attend and participate in a Virtual Mini Pupillage Day on 19 April 2023.

During the course of the day, participants will hear from members and staff about pupillage and tenancy in FTB, including the application and interview process and insights from all levels of seniority about practice in FTB’s areas of specialism. There will also be opportunities to take part in interactive advocacy exercises, discuss leading cases Chambers has been involved in and ask any burning questions about FTB, pupillage and the Bar in general.

Those who are at least in their second year of a qualifying law degree or who have commenced the GDL or other graduate-entry LLB courses are eligible to apply. Warwick’s own Catherine Briddick, explores the recent controversial Small Boat Bill - and it’s clear defiance of our current understanding of international law and non-refoulement (the understanding that refugees should not be returned to their country of origin, and their site of persecution). Catherine will help attendees understand the gravity of this decision, how it may affect the world’s most vulnerable, and how students may use their voices to stop such a decision coming to fruition.

An evening with Black lawyers at Linklaters

Join us on the evening of Tuesday 2 May for an IN-PERSON event for Black Heritage students with Magic Circle law firm, Linklaters at the firm’s City of London headquarters.

During the event we’ll be hearing from a panel of Black Linklaters’ lawyers and representatives about their career journeys to date, discussing some of the hurdles they’ve faced and lessons learned along the way, while giving advice for those hoping to follow in their footsteps. The speakers will provide an insight into their day-to-day work, the hot commercial awareness topics impacting their clients and look ahead to what the future holds for business.

There will also be a Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test masterclass, providing an introduction to the test and outlining the key foundational skills needed to succeed at this stage of Linklaters’ application process.

At this event, you will hear first-hand from Warwick alumni keen to share their career story and lived experience of race and ethnicity in the workplace.

The panel will explore what it’s like to navigate the professional world as your authentic self, experience in navigating job applications and interviews, how to recognise an employer committed to race and ethnic diversity.

This fair is open to ALL students including Masters and Postgrads. Attending a careers fair will offer the opportunity to explore your career possibilities, investigate roles you maybe interested in applying to as you move towards graduation and find out more about internships and work experience opportunities on offer too.
