Warwick Students Compete in Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, Vienna

The goal of the Vis Arbitral Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international business disputes among law leaders of tomorrow. The students were trained through two phases: the writing of memorandums for Claimant and Respondent and the hearing of oral argument based upon the memorandums.

One of Warwick’s mooters, Todor Papanov, describes the experience:-

“We had four opponents: Masaryk University from the Czech Republic, Alexandria University from Egypt, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg from Germany, and University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines from France.

“All of the moots went well and our performance improved significantly as the competition proceeded, and particularly the last three moots went very well for our team.

“Luckily for me, this is my third consecutive year participating in the Vis Moot and representing Warwick. Undoubtedly, I can confirm that our performance is constantly improving during the years and I believe we did a great job this year. Unfortunately, we did not proceed to the final rounds of the competition but I would like to point out that Warwick is one of the "young" participants in the 21-year-old competition with more than 300 universities taking part this year.

“In my opinion, and I am sure everyone who has ever taken place in this competition would agree, the Vis Moot is a life-changing experience. Apart from its competitive side, everyone has the unique chance to meet and communicate with famous academics and practitioners in the world of arbitration and students from all over the world.

“Therefore, I am determined to continue being involved with the moot. Unfortunately, this is my last year at Warwick and I am due to start my LPC in September in London which will prevent me from participating again as a Warwick representative. However, I am planning to come back as a coach of the future Warwick team.”

Congratulations to the team and all involved!
