Love the drama of a courtroom? Interested in theatre or storytelling? This one’s for you.

Current PhD student, Sean Mulcahy, will be hosting a colloquium event all around Law and Performance at the University of Warwick and is looking for three enthusiastic undergraduate student volunteers to help throughout the day on Saturday 24 March.

We asked Sean about what to expect from the event:

Law In/And/As Performance is a one-day interdisciplinary research colloquium exploring the intersections of law and performance.

While much can be learned from looking at law as literary texts or stories, the rubric of performance allows for a wider exploration of law's relation to body, space, voice, text and so much more.

The idea behind this colloquium is to open up conversations between the disciplines of law and performance and to break down some of the barriers between the two. We have a fantastic array of speakers exploring everything from cinema to theatre to art to landscape to law.

Our two keynotes, in particular, are absolutely fantastic! Professor Alan Read is the author of the ground-breaking book Theatre & Law and Dr Kate Leader undertook her PhD in performance studies exploring trials, truth-telling and the performing body. We also have some very exciting panellists which include renowned artist Carey Young.

The event is open to anyone with an interest in law and performance and how the two intersect. The hope is that an event like this will foster interdisciplinary collaborations and new perspectives on law and performance.

What sort of tasks will the student volunteers be taking part in during the event?

The roles will involve assisting the colloquium organisers on the day by manning a registrations desk and liaising with catering staff. There will also be a brief meeting with the conference organisers in the final week of the term.

The volunteers will also have the opportunity to co-author critical reflections on the colloquium in Exchanges: the Warwick Research Journal. This would provide students with skills in writing for an academic audience, managing publication deadlines and co-authoring with more senior researchers alongside the experience of being published in an academic journal.

A little bit more about Sean Mulcahy, the event host:

Sean is currently undertaking a Joint PhD through the Monash-Warwick Alliance with Monash University, Melbourne. In Monash, Sean is based out of the Centre for Theatre and Performance and, in Warwick, he is based out of the Law School where his research centres on law and performance.
