LLB Student Awarded CUHK Global Law Scholarship

Current LLB student Francesca Mitrofan has been awarded The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Law Global Scholarship to study on their LLM programme from September later this year.

Having really enjoyed her module in International Economic Law last year, she was already considering pursuing this interest further by studying for an LLM in the subject but decided to apply for the award having received notification from the Law School of the exciting opportunity.

She explains, “I was mainly intrigued by the fact that with the advent and consolidation of globalisation, governments have found that domestic issues often reach beyond national borders - and bearing in mind this phenomenon escapes the logic of territoriality and defies conventional methods of regulation, the interplay between Law, Politics and Economics is progressively becoming fundamental for both policy-makers and practitioners.”

“Also, after assisting Dr Mohsen al Attar in his analysis on the African Continental Free Trade Area, I was assured of my desire to understand the instruments that mediate the relationship between different private, institutional and international actors.”

“I thought that shifting to a new territory, namely Hong Kong, would enable me to acquire a more robust perspective of the international legal order. In my pursuit of progressing into a career focused on cross-border trade, one of the most effective ways in which I can enhance my legal thinking is seeing how other systems deal with economic and legal problems.”

Francesca added, “I am really looking forward to being part of CUHK’s stimulating environment and building upon my intercultural competence. This is after completing my undergraduate studies at the University of Warwick which I chose due to its academic recognition and highly multicultural campus. I think that pursuing an LLM in one of the world’s financial districts will add a sense of multiplicity and a profound educational value.”

Solange Mouthaan, Director of Undergraduate Studies at Warwick Law School shared, “this is a significant achievement, and is a tribute to Francesca's commitment to and enthusiasm for her studies."

Francesca is also understandably proud of her achievement, she told us ”I have always been a hard-working individual, yet with the support of Dr al Attar, Andrew Williams and Chris Tassis I have realised that barriers, whether those set by ourselves or by others, can be overcome.”

Congratulations Francesca and best of luck in your LLM.
