Dr Maryna Utkina participates in Summer School on the Law of the Council of Europe

Dr Maryna Utkina, Associate Tutor at Warwick Law School and British Academy Fellow received one of 10 scholarships to participate in the Liverpool Summer School on the Law of the Council of Europe.

Out of over 250 applicants from different countries, only 40 participants were selected to take part in the Summer School hosted by the University of Liverpool on 3-14 July 2023.

Distinguished legal scholars, policy makers and PhD students gathered at the Summer School for a series of talks, panel discussions and networking sessions to address the wide range of crises confronting Europe. During the two weeks, delegates examined the enduring strength and adaptability of the Council of Europe in the face of contemporary issues including; Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, public health emergencies and climate change.

The Council of Europe plays a vital role in shaping European legal standards and human rights. Through attending this event, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework, conventions, and mechanisms established by the Council of Europe as well as expertise from practitioners and opportunities for networking and collaboration.

A highlight of the event included a keynote address by Professor Robert Spano, former President of the European Court of Human Rights. In his speech titled "The Council of Europe and the European Union – A Unified Political Community for the Protection of Human Rights?”, Professor Spano discussed the intricate relationship between these two entities and their collective efforts in safeguarding human rights.

Regarding her participation, Maryna Utkina stated:

“This Summer School offers tangible contributions for society through promoting a culture of respect for human rights, the rule of law and international cooperation. It has opened the doors for continued collaboration and sharing of resources that will contribute to the advancement of European legal principles.”
