Students celebrate Warwick Law staff with SSLC Awards
The SSLC Staff Awards for 2018-19 took place in the Law School Hub yesterday where our SSLC reps Amy Wang and Toby Stacey took to the stage to announce the winners. They celebrated together with their students, colleagues and some Easter treats and were presented with a small token of appreciation from the student body.
There were lots of amazing members of staff nominated in each category. The winners are listed below along with some lovely comments from our students.
First Year Award for Teaching Excellence: Jane Bryan
“Jane is so personable and kind whilst also being brilliant in helping us all to miraculously understand Property Law. Her ability to break down complex legal issues into simple issues is incredible and is one of the key things that make her stand out.”
“You can tell she's invested in thinking of her students as people rather than just bodies in a lecture hall. She always tries to accommodate our different learning styles and requests. She's very kind and understanding and always tries to look after us.”
Second Year Award for Teaching Excellence: Ben Farrand
“I'd like to nominate Ben Farrand based on his passion, the quality of his teaching, and his admirable expertise. His lessons were truly enjoyable and I'm glad to have taken his module.”
Final Year Award for Teaching Excellence: Hassan Nizami
“Hassan is always very patient and a great teacher. He makes an intimidating module like Trusts more approachable with his straight-forward style of lectures – and the chocolates are a great motivation to speak more in class!”
“He is a great lecturer and seminar tutor because he uses really basic examples to break down complex concepts.”
Best Optional Module: Law and Disorder
“The module gives you the freedom to explore a topic of your choice, which is far more engaging than a set curriculum. The approach to both lectures and seminars makes the module far more engaging than most modules. We particularly enjoy the analyses of movie scenes, podcasts, etc. The assessment is far more engaging than any other, and gives you the scope to be creative (which is quite rare in most law modules).”
Best Personal Tutor: Illan Wall
“Illan has been great as my personal tutor due to his approachable and friendly nature. He responds quickly to my questions and gives such good advice. He is literally my life coach! He always makes time for students and is so approachable.”
Best Member of the Professional Services Team: Caroline Proctor
“Caroline is honestly so hard-working and caring. She has been always very helpful to me and other students.”
Best Newcomer: Mohsen Al Attar
“Mohsen’s a wonderful lecturer, who somehow manages to make even the most dull topic interesting, and everything so easily understandable.”
“From the very first seminar he taught us, he knew everyone’s names, which shows that he cares about his students. He is always willing to make time to speak to his tutees no matter how busy he is.”
“I love his teaching style that forces students to think critically rather than spoon-feeding information.”
Illan Wall, one of our winners told us “it was an honour to win the award, the students have been really enthusiastic about the module this year and it has been a real pleasure to work with them.”
It is lovely for staff at the School to be recognised in this way, especially by our students so thank you to the SSLC for organising these awards. We look forward to seeing who wins next year!
