Warwick Law School & GLOBE welcomes new Honorary Associate Professor

Warwick Law School is pleased to welcome Dr Anil Yilmaz Vastardis from Essex Law School, University of Essex to our community. Dr Yilmaz Vastardis has been appointed as Honorary Associate Professor with the GLOBE Centre and will be supporting research, teaching, impact and engagement activities, and collaborations with colleagues.

Dr Yilmaz Vastardis is Senior Lecturer at Essex Law School and the co-director of the Essex Business and Human Rights Project. Her main research interests are in the fields of international investment law and business and human rights. Her research addresses the relationship between corporate law, international investment law, human rights law, and tort law, examining how these areas can and should interact so as to operationalise human rights standards in the modern business context. She has published works in leading international law journals and edited collections on parent-subsidiary relationships in the business and human rights context, non-financial reporting, duty of care in supply chain relationships, human rights in investment contracts and the embedded inequalities in the investment treaty regime. Her book, The Nationality of Corporate Investors under International Investment Law, was published with Hart Publishing in 2020. Currently, she is researching the impact of international investment law on a just and equitable green transition, with a focus on energy transition and climate finance. She is a member of New Frontiers in International Development Finance and a Co-Investigator on the BA funded Equity and the Global Climate Finance Architecture: An Evaluation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) Framework.

Dr Yilmaz Vastardis is also a founding member and steering group member of The IEL Collective, a platform for diversifying and pluralising the scholarship and practice of international economic law, of which Warwick Law School and Essex Law School are institutional founding members. Among other roles, Dr Yilmaz Vastardis coordinates and supports the Collective’s Mentoring and Professional Development Scheme.

It is great to have you with us Yilmaz. Welcome to Warwick.

Dr Yilmaz Vastardis will soon be presenting a paper on ‘Climate Action, Foreign Investment Protection and the Many Faces of De-Risking’ at a GLOBE Centre Panel on The Challenge of International Investment Law and Energy Transition with Dr Oliver Hailes, LSE Law School. This event will take place on Thursday 14 November, 12.30pm – 2.30pm in the Student Hub at Warwick Law School.

About the Event:

The challenge of climate action and energy transition will entail a significant restructuring of economies and associated law and regulatory policy to achieve the global decarbonisation goals. The transformative environmental, social and economic policies necessary to achieve this green transition in a just and equitable manner will create tensions between countries’ climate pledges and policies and their obligations under international investment law.

This panel will feature presentations from two international investment law scholars investigating the impact of laws protecting foreign investment on national and international climate action and on the financing of global energy transition.
