Climbing the ladder: Warwick Alumnus makes Partner

Former Warwick LLM student, Varun Lamba has been promoted to Partner at his Law firm in India.

Following completion of his LLM in International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation here at Warwick in 2009, Varun went on to join AZB & Partners as an Associate. He was later promoted to Senior Associate in 2015 and is now a Partner.

We love to hear from our alumni and what they are up to. We caught up with Varun to find out a little more.

Congratulations Varun. So what does the promotion mean? What extra responsibilities other than work execution will you have?

My additional responsibilities will be both firm and client facing:

  • Sharing acquired knowledge from years of practice with peers.
  • Spearheading Knowledge Management Sessions (KMGs) i.e. a platform where we gather to present and discuss legal topics. I call it doing an LLM and getting paid for it, as it is extremely beneficial for our growth as well as adding value to client deliverables.
  • Exploring business development opportunities.
  • Managing existing client relationships.

Varun

What kind of work is your firm involved in?

Through 6 offices and approximately 400 lawyers across India, we deal with a number of areas, some of which include mergers, acquisitions, general corporate, private equity, capital markets, banking, finance, compliance & investigation, anti-corruption, anti-bribery, corporate governance, infrastructure and project finance, real estate, media and entertainment, information technology, employment, insurance, intellectual property, taxation, competition law, litigation and arbitration.

To quote a few achievements, AZB has been awarded "Best Law Firm of the Year – India" as per Corporate USA Today – Law Awards 2018 and ranked No.1 as per RSG Top 40 Indian Law Firms Ranking of 2017.

How do you feel about the promotion?

With great excitement comes great responsibility, [sensing a Spiderman fan here], and I am confident that I will fulfil my duties with sincerity.

What did you enjoy most about your course at Warwick?

An open platform to interact with professors having extensive practical experience, including at premier international law firms, coupled with a sound learning infrastructure and friendly atmosphere.

How did it help you get to where you are today?

The University of Warwick is cognisant of the changing legal environment, shown by the tailor-made courses on offer. My core subject in the LLM was Corporate Governance, which is one of my practice areas, and the faculty at Warwick helped me develop the basic skills that I apply to matters on a day to day basis.

Varun added that “as a University of Warwick alumnus, whenever I reach out to the existing faculty or admin department, I am always greeted with the same sense of belonging which was present when I was studying at the University; to me, this demonstrates the core value system of the University of Warwick.”

All of our alumni will forever be part of the Warwick Law School family, no matter where you are in the world. What are you up to? Get in touch and let us know.
