Warwick Law win SSLC of the year

We are delighted to announce that the Law School’s Staff Student Liaison Committee won ‘SSLC of the year’ at the Student Union Representation Awards on Friday.

The awards (which were held at The Terrace Bar on Friday 10 May) aim to recognise and celebrate the amazing achievements in, and contributions to, academic representation and democracy at Warwick SU and the Law School were nominated under the category of SSLC of the year.

Warwick SU told us that they are immensely proud of the numerous contributions of SSLCs and how they collectively work to promote and protect students’ learning and academic interests, plus provide an opportunity to provide feedback in an open manner devoid of fear and prejudice. SSLCs have helped to foster honest debate about what students’ needs are, making it a lot easier for the university community to partner with the SU and student’s learning communities.

Law won the award because they have not only engaged with the SU and their cohort, but have made a positive impact on the student experience and created meaningful positive change within the Union and their department.

Final year law student and SSLC chair for 2019/20 Toby Stacey, collected the award on behalf of the team. He told us, “It was a pleasant surprise. The SSLC has been doing a lot behind-the-scenes in the past year, in respect of a number of issues. It’s all about collaboration and I am grateful to students and staff who have engaged with the SSLC throughout the year.

“There is a really strong dialogue between staff and students in the Law School – even though this might not always be apparent. The Law SSLC has proven to be a really effective channel for student voice, and I hope Law students will continue to raise issues and feedback to their student representatives.”

SSLC of the Year Award

The Law School are so proud of the SSLC and all of the hard work and commitment they put in, working with the School to improve the experience of our students. They are a pleasure to work with and this award recognises their incredible efforts and the impact they have made. They have truly gone above and beyond introducing a range of new initiatives including:

  • successfully acquiring Law School funding to enable a team to enter the national client interviewing competition, allowing the participants to experience authentic learning and develop transferable graduate skills
  • introducing the WLS staff awards to celebrate excellence among the professional services team and teaching staff
  • assisting during open days and welcome week, providing a student perspective to both prospective and enrolling students, which feedback tells us is extremely helpful
  • arguing for the removal of the ban on students taking language modules below level 5 (A Level standard). This will have far-reaching benefits for many students, enabling them to acquire further transferable skills, increase mastery in another language, equip them for the global workplace and enable them to develop personally.

Maaya Sachdev, President of Warwick Law Society for the 2018/19 academic year, commented, “the entire experience of working with the SSLC has been enriching and invaluable and I really think that all those who are part of the Law SSLC deserve this award as testament to their hard work over this past year, and in recognition of their sustained commitment towards supporting students within the Law School.”

Dr Jane Bryan, Director of Student Experience at Warwick Law School works closely with the SSLC to implement changes. She told us, "I could not be more proud of the SSLC and all their hard work, this award was extremely well deserved.”

Congratulations to everyone involved.
