This seminar is the first in a series of events on the theme of ‘The Problem of Punishment’. This project, sponsored by the Social & Legal Studies Journal and by the University of Warwick, is aimed at pursuing a trans-disciplinary examination into the role of punishment that bridges gaps between philosophical, legal, psychosocial, sociological and political understandings, in order to raise awareness about and challenge the way in which punishment is increasingly practiced and promoted, and decreasingly questioned and problematized in contemporary public discourse.

The first seminar focuses on theoretical reflections around the theme, in which three eminent scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds will each present a paper as a general reaction to the question 'How, and to what extent, does punishment influence, condition and affect people’s sense of self in everyday life—their identities, self-consciousness and social experiences?'
