Stephen's principal research interest is normativity and the theory of power. In his latest book (2021) he undertakes an archaeology of power, indicating how the thought about this concept, as it develops from Aristotle to Hobbes, is rearticulated by Leibniz as a theory of normative space. It builds on his 2015 work on Spinoza's theory of power. Stephen welcomes PhD applications from potential students with a good grounding in continental philosophy and the methods of the history of ideas.
