This Chapter discusses the representation of ‘difference’ and ‘otherness’ in popular culture and mass media. Hall begins with race and ethnicity but ties in the intersectionality of other dimensions such as gender, sexuality, class etc. Through the analysis of several examples, this Chapter explores the complex feelings, attitudes, and fears that representation triggers at the individual and societal levels. Hall invites the reader to identify the tropes and characteristic strategies used in representation while also considering why the study of ‘difference’ and ‘otherness’ is important.
