Good Practice Building Blocks for Equality and Human Rights Impact Assessments Launched

On Wednesday 23 April, the Sottish Human Rights Commission and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (Scotland) launched a set of resources to assist public authorities in undertaking robust and meaningful equality and human rights impact assessment processes. This was the culmination of 4 years of work which Dr James Harrison, co-director of the Centre, has been integrally involved in. Dr Harrison designed the 10 good practice building blocks for assessing impact which are at the heart of the resources. You can find the full set of resources, including the building blocks at http://www.scottishhumanrights.com/eqhria/

This work was supported by a steering group of members including, the Scottish Government, Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA), NHS Health Scotland, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, the Scottish Councils Equality Network, Police Scotland, the Scottish Prison Service, Audit Scotland, Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) and others.

Centre's Report for the Scottish Human Rights Commission on HRIA Now Published

In April 2010, Dr James Harrison, Mary Ann-Stephenson (External Member of the Centre) and Andrew Williams were commissioned by the Scottish Human Rights Commission to review all the practice of conducting human rights impact assessments in the UK and internationally and to produce guiding principles for conducting future human rights impact assessments.

Their final report includes an eight-step process that can be utilised in any HIA process and detailed recommendations for how those eight steps should be implemented. The report also includes illustrations of how this HRIA process will function.

The report can be accessed here.
