CCC 2026 Annual Lecture delivered by Harvard Professor and Warwick Alumna Pippa Norris
On 23 September 2026, world-leading political scientist and Warwick alumna, Professor Pippa Norris (Harvard Kennedy), delivered the Centre for Constitutions in Context's 2026 Annual Lecture. Pippa's lecture was titled "The Cultural Roots of Democratic Backsliding" based on her forthcoming book to be published by Oxford University Press.
Pippa discussed the relationship between democratic backsliding and populism, considering, more broadly, the various accounts in the literature for democratic backsliding (historical narratives, institutional explanations, performance accounts, and cultural theories). In Q&A, she also addressed, among other issues, the current "crisis of governance", executive overreach and underreach, political trust and satisfaction, and gender backlash.
