CCC hosts first-of-its-kind roundtable on contextual approaches in academic publishing moderated by Prof Tom Ginsburg

On 19 November 2025, the CCC hosted a first-of-its-kind roundtable discussion on Contextual Approaches to Constitutional Law in Academic Publishing. The roundtable brought together representatives from six leading comparative constitutional law journals for a thoughtful conversation about the role of context in constitutional law scholarship.

The roundtable was moderated by Professor Tom Ginsburg (University of Chicago) and chaired by CCC co-director Dr David Vitale.

Participating in the roundtable were:

  • From Comparative Constitutional Studies: Dr Lulu Weis
  • From Constitutional Studies: Dr José María Serna de la Garza
  • From European Constitutional Law Review: Professor Monica Claes and Professor Leonard Besselink
  • From Global Constitutionalism: Dr Susan Kang
  • From the International Journal of Constitutional Law: Professor Gráinne de Búrca
  • From Public Law: Professor Aileen McHarg and Professor Roger Masterman

Panel members spoke about the recent growth of contextual work in constitutional law scholarship, the meaning of "context" in legal scholarship (including its relationship to interdisciplinary approaches), and the peer review process for contextual work, among other things.

We would like to thank Tom for excellent moderating, our wonderful speakers for a terrific discussion, and our audience members for their engagement.
