Phoebe Bower wins the Julia Kerr Prize
At a ceremony held at Warwick University Phoebe Bower was presented with the Julia Kerr Prize for Human Rights. Russ Stetler made the announcement before delivering the annual Julia Kerr Lecture. The award and the lecture is funded by John Kerr in memory of his late wife.
Phoebe’s award was in recognition of her long commitment to the Death Penalty Project, which she now coordinates for the Centre. Her contribution was called
a fantastic example of dedication, imagination and sheer hard work’ by Andrew Williams, the Centre’s co-Director.
Russ Stetler presented the award certificate with a prize of £500. His lecture was aptly concerned with the state of the death penalty in the US today.

Centre Director Andrew Williams' "A Very British Killing" has been shortlisted for the prestigious Orwell Prize
In addition, administrators of the George Orwell prize have taken the unprecedented step of sending all seven shortlisted books to David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband in hope that they take heed of the urgent issues raised in these nominated books. Jean Seaton, Director of the Prize stated that:
..the books we will send the leaders warn them of, in [the case of] A Very British Killing, their huge, human responsibilities as leaders for asking difficult questions and protecting decency and proper justice."

Andrew Williams at the Hay Festival, Wednesday 29 May 2013
'In Our Name' Wednesday 29 May 2013, 2.30pm
Andrew Williams, author of A Very British Killing: The Death of Baha Mousa, will appear alongside Ed Vulliamy, investigative journalist and author of Bosnia: The Reckoning, at the upcoming Hay Festival in May.
The journalists investigate the grotesque misconduct of war and the insidious moral corruption of everyone involved, the decay of public life, and the endemic parallels that exist with Britain’s current institutional structures."
