Julia Kerr Prize - 2015/2016 Edition

The Julia Kerr Prize was generously founded in memory of Julia Kerr, a Warwick Law School alumna, class of 1975.

The prize of £500 will be awarded to the student who has best demonstrated the use of skills and knowledge gained at Warwick Law School to make an important contribution to human rights in the community (locally, nationally and internationally) as a participant of activities arranged through Warwick University.

Applications must include the following:

1. A 2,000 word reflective essay (non-academic) in which applicants consider their contribution to the promotion of human rights in the wider community. We are also happy to receive more creative pieces and submissions that include photography or video clips.

2. A short CV (1 page) including details of the applicant’s academic and extracurricular activities relevant to the prize, full name and current email address.

Applications and queries should be sent to Alice at a.panepinto@warwick.ac.uk by Monday 21st December (close of business).

The winning essay will be considered for publication in Lacuna magazine (www.lacuna.org.uk) published by the Centre for Human Rights in Practice at Warwick Law School.

 

The prizes will be awarded at the Annual Julia Kerr Lecture to be arranged in early 2016 (date tbc).

Poetry Workshop on Freedom of Speech with Laila Sumpton

An inter-active poetry workshop on Freedom of Speech with Laila Sumpton.

Laila is a member of the Keats House Poets Forum and an example of her recent work can be found here.She has recently been working with the Centre for Human Rights in Practice on poetry projects related to human rights.

This 90 minute inter-active workshop for staff and students is FREE but booking is essential as places are limited. Tea/coffee and cakes will be served before the workshop at 1.30 pm.

Death Penalty Internship: Application Process

The Death Penalty Internship Programme is a unique opportunity for “hands-on” exposure of legal work involving the common law system of the United States of America, which also encompasses diverse areas of criminal justice, medical law and human rights. The duration of the internship is two months and the student can expect to work on: United States legal research, manage case files, contribute to the briefs filed in state and federal courts, interview witnesses and jurors in appeals cases and visit prisons, including death row.
