Year 2

Optional Modules

View optional modules available to second-year students, by course. If you have temporarily withdrawn and are in a different cohort to the original cohort you started with, please check the course information page, or email undergraduate.law@warwick.ac.uk, to check how many optional modules you should be taking in 2024/25.

Law (3 Year), Law (4 Year), Law with Year Abroad in English and Law with Humanities

During your second year you will complete two compulsory modules totalling 30 CATS:

LA247: Contract Law (15 CATS) – Term 1
LA248: Property Law (15 CATS) – Term 1

You will then select 90 CATS of optional modules from the optional modules below, of which up to 30 CATS can be external modules.

Term 1: 2 optional modules (30 CATS)
Term 2: 4 optional modules (60 CATS)

Please note: Students thinking of becoming a barrister or seeking a qualification as a lawyer in other jurisdictions are advised to study LA240: Foundations of EU Law in year 2, 3 or 4 (term 2 module in 2024/25).

Law with French Law and German Law

During your second year you will complete three compulsory modules totalling 60 CATS:

LA247: Contract Law (15 CATS) – Term 1
LA248: Property Law (15 CATS) – Term 1
LA212: French Law or LA216: German Law (30 CATS) – full year

You will then select an additional 60 CATS from the optional modules below. Of the 60 CATS, you can select up to 15 CATS of external modules.

Term 1: 1 optional module (15 CATS)
Term 2: 3 optional modules (45 CATS)

Please note: Students thinking of becoming a barrister or seeking a qualification as a lawyer in other jurisdictions are advised to study LA240: Foundations of EU Law in year 2 or 4 (term 2 module in 2024/25).

Law and Sociology

During your second year you will complete the following compulsory modules totalling 105 CATS:

LA104: Criminal Law (30 CATS) – full year
LA217: Social Theory of Law (30 CATS) – full year
LA247: Contract Law (15 CATS) – Term 1
SO242: Designing and Conducting Social Research (15 CATS) – Term 1
Either SO243: Practice & Interpretation of Quantitative Research (15 CATS) OR SO245: Modern Social Theory (15 CATS) – Term 2

You will then select an additional 15 CATS from the optional modules below

Term 2: 1 optional module (15 CATS)

Politics, Philosophy and Law

During your second year you will take 30 CATS of Law modules. Choose one of:

LA104: Criminal Law (30 CATS), if not taken in first year – full year
LA124: Tort Law (30 CATS), if not taken in first year – full year
LA129: Law, State and Individual (30 CATS) – full year
LA205: International Law (30 CATS) – full year
LA346: Gender and the Law (30 CATS)- full year

You will then select 30 CATS of optional modules, which you may take from any of the PPL departments or another department in the university

Term 1: 1 optional module (15 CATS)
Term 2: 1 optional module (15 CATS)
