Year 3

Optional Modules

View optional modules available to third-year students, by course. If you have temporarily withdrawn and are in a different cohort to the original cohort you started with, please check the course information page, or email undergraduate.law@warwick.ac.uk, to check how many optional modules you should be taking in 2024/25.

Law (3 Year), Law with Humanities

During your third year you will complete one compulsory module totalling 15 or 30 CATS:

LA399: Supervised Project (30 CATS) – full year
Or LA399: Supervised Project (15 CATS) – Term 2

You will then select 90 or 105 CATS worth of optional modules depending on the length of your Supervised Project:

Term 1: 4 optional modules (60 CATS) (if taking 15 CATS Supervised Project) or 3 optional modules (45 CATS) (if taking 30 CATS supervised project)
Term 2: 3 optional modules (45 CATS)

If you are thinking of becoming a barrister or seeking qualification as a lawyer in other jurisdictions, which recognise the Warwick law degree, you will be advised to take LA240 Foundations of European Law in years 2 or 3, and LA3A3 Trusts in term 1 of your final year (subject to Bar Standards Board requirements).

Law (4 Year)

During your third year there are no core modules

You will then select 120 CATS of optional modules:

Term 1: 60 CATS optional modules (4 modules)
Term 2: 60 CATS optional modules (4 modules)

If you are thinking of becoming a barrister or seeking qualification as a lawyer in other jurisdictions, which recognise the Warwick law degree, you will be advised to take LA240 Foundations of European Law in years 2, 3 or 4, and LA3A3 Trusts in term 1 of your final year (subject to Bar Standards Board requirements).

Law and Sociology

During your third year you will need to take 60 CATS of Law optional modules, and 60 CATS from the Department of Sociology.

If you are thinking of becoming a barrister or seeking qualification as a lawyer in other jurisdictions, which recognise the Warwick law degree, you will be advised to take LA240 EU Law, and LA3A3 Trusts in term 1 of your third or final year (subject to Bar Standards Board requirements).

PPL

At least 90 CATS in total from at least two of the three PPL departments.

If you elect to take modules from two departments, you must choose at least 30 CATS from each.

I.e. either a 30:60 split or a 45:45 split - NOT a 15:75 split.

If you elect to take modules from all three departments, you must choose 30 CATS from at least two of them.

i.e., a 30:30:30 split, or a 30:45:15 split – NOT a 60:15:15 split.

The PPL Dissertation can count towards satisfying your CATS requirements in one of the disciplines it covers. For example, if your dissertation is on a topic at the intersection of Law and Politics, it can count towards your CATS requirements in either Law or Politics.

You have 30 CATS of optional modules, which you may take from the PPL departments or another department in the University.
