View the structure of your core and optional modules by cohort. Please note that there are no optional modules for first year students.

During your second year you will complete two required core modules totalling 30 CATS:
- LA247: Contract Law (15 CATS) – Term 1
- LA248: Property Law (15 CATS) – Term 1
You will then select 90 CATS of optional modules from the optional modules below, of which up to 30 CATS can be external modules.
- Term 1: 2 optional modules (30 CATS)
- Term 2: 4 optional modules (60 CATS)
If you are thinking of qualifying as a solicitor or barrister in England or Wales, or in another jurisdiction requiring the study of foundational subjects, you should choose LA240 Foundations of European Law in Years 2 or 3, and LA3A3 Law of Trusts in your final year. Students wishing to qualify in another jurisdiction should check the minimum credit requirements for the foundational subjects and, if necessary, consult their personal tutor for guidance.
During your second year you will complete three required core modules totalling 60 CATS:
- LA247: Contract Law (15 CATS) – Term 1

- LA212: French Law or LA216: German Law (30 CATS) – full year
You will then select an additional 60 CATS from the optional modules below. Of the 60 CATS, you can select up to 15 CATS of external modules.

A requirement of this degree is students must take least 90 CATS of modules from the Faculty of Arts or Department of Philosophy, and 120 CATS Law modules across years 2 and 3 (60/75 CATS Law optional modules depending on the length of your supervised project). The remaining 30 CATS of modules in years 2 and 3 can be Law, Humanities or modules from other departments.
During your second year you will take 30 CATS of Law modules. Choose one of:
- LA2D8: Criminal Law (30 CATS), if not taken in first year – full year
- LA2E1: Tort Law (30 CATS), if not taken in first year – full year
- LA2D9: Law, State and Individual (30 CATS) – full year
You will then select 30 CATS of optional modules, which you may take from any of the PPL departments or another department in the university
- Term 1: 1 optional module (15 CATS)
- Term 2: 1 optional module (15 CATS)

During your third year you will need to take 45 CATS of Law optional modules, and 60 CATS from the Department of Sociology.

If you elect to take modules from two departments, you must choose at least 30 CATS from each.
I.e. either a 30:60 split or a 45:45 split - NOT a 15:75 split.
If you elect to take modules from all three departments, you must choose 30 CATS from at least two of them.
i.e., a 30:30:30 split, or a 30:45:15 split – NOT a 60:15:15 split.
The PPL Dissertation can count towards satisfying your CATS requirements in one of the disciplines it covers. For example, if your dissertation is on a topic at the intersection of Law and Politics, it can count towards your CATS requirements in either Law or Politics.
You have 30 CATS of optional modules, which you may take from the PPL departments or another department in the University.

IMPORTANT: A requirement of this degree is that at over years 3 and 4 students must take least 90 CATS of each Law and Sociology modules.
Students can take up to 30 CATS of non-Law or Sociology optional modules.
