Module Choices

Greetings from the Head of Department

Congratulations on securing a highly coveted place at one of the world’s leading Politics and International Studies Departments. We are proud to be welcoming you to an international cohort of lively, questioning, and curious minds who are studying and researching some of the most pressing issues in global politics today.

Uncompromising excellence in teaching and research are the hallmarks of PAIS, but equally our supportive and inclusive ethos is that every member of the Department should develop the confidence to find and critically reflect upon their own voice. Ranked 4th in the UK for the quality of our research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and with an overall satisfaction rate of 94% in the 2017 National Student Survey (NSS), we like to think that you’ve made a good choice. PAIS is the No 1 department in the University for assessment and feedback.

Throughout your BA programme, PAIS will offer you unparalleled opportunities to enhance your expertise in Politics and International Studies, to develop your academic and professional skills, and ultimately to progress into the career of your choice.

As one of the largest and most dynamic Politics and International Studies Departments in UK and Europe, we are able to be comprehensive in offering a choice of modules on every aspect of Politics – ranging across our pathways in Political Theory, International Security, International Political Economy, and Comparative Politics.

GraduationJustin Intellectually, PAIS modules enable you to analyse in depth cross-cutting contemporary themes of crucial policy importance in every region of the world – themes such as the global financial crisis, migration, poverty, and conflict, to name only a few.All of our academic staff are highly research-active and internationally recognised in their respective fields. This means that they can bring to the classroom the most advanced and exciting political knowledge and experience. It also means that your reading lists will be full of books and articles written by the people who teach you.

A PAIS degree will equip you not only with expertise in the fascinating discipline of Politics and International Studies, but also an array of advanced study skills, opportunities for studying abroad, and for personal development.

For instance, PAIS has recently added to our curriculum new quantitative methodology modules in our nationally awarded Nuffield Foundation Q-Step Centre, and a new scheme offering the chance to work alongside our academic staff on a research project in order to hone your analytical skills.

In PAIS teaching, research, and administrative staff are all here to offer you strong academic support in your study choices and through personal tutoring. We listen carefully to the views of students – not only via the NSS, but also the Warwick Student Survey, PAIS module surveys, and the Student-Staff Liaison Committee.

  • PAIS is ranked number 1 in the Russell Group of top Universities for student voice and learning opportununities and number 2 for teaching, assessment and feedback, and learning community.
  • We are one of the very few academic departments at Warwick to provide individual written feedback on exams
  • All academic staff hold dedicated regular ‘Advice and Feedback Hours’
  • We have a dedicated Director of Student Experience and Progression

You can be sure that a PAIS degree will set you on the path to achieving your career ambitions. Whether looking to move into a wide array of professions or into further study at Masters or Doctoral level, you will find that PAIS alumni are in extremely high demand.

Finally, as a graduate of PAIS myself (MA International Relations), I hope that you enjoy and take full advantage of your time in PAIS as much as I did as a student – and continue to do.

With a recent expansion of academic staff, a newly acquired building with refurbished facilities, and a spacious staff-student common room, the intake of 2017 has much to be excited about.

All of my colleagues and I look forward to seeing you develop academically in the Department, and we will be proud to see you successfully graduate in three or four years’ time. In the meantime, I hope to see you in our common room before too long.

Nick Vaughan-Williams
