Attacking gender education in Latin America: an ambiguous consensus?

Addressing gender issues in schools is a sensitive topic worldwide. While there is a global consensus linking human and economic development to gender equality, conservative actors are simultaneously building an apparent counter-consensus centred on anti-gender ideas. A diverse array of actors, including politicians, far-right groups, social movements, religious organisations, and economic actors, has come together to block, hinder, and dismantle gender-related policies in schools. Latin America is a laboratory for studying the production and systemic dissemination of anti-gender campaigns. How do they navigate potentially conflicting interests or ideological differences, even if it necessitates an ‘ambiguous consensus’? This article seeks to contribute to the study of anti-gender literature by examining three distinct Latin American case studies (Brazil, Costa Rica and Peru). It proposes an analytical framework to assess different ambiguities (axiological, ideological-partisan, and political-electoral), aimed at enhancing the understanding of anti-gender policies shaping education in Latin America.
