Student Engagement and Progress Monitoring Policy
Monitoring Points
As a student, you have some responsibilities to the Department, just as we have responsibilities to you. We want to be sure that you are coping with your work and not falling behind and so we ask that you meet 'Monitoring Points' throughout the academic year. Different years of study have differing Monitoring Points and details are below:
We record student attendance at each of the following events:
Standard Undergraduate Contact Points (including incoming Study Abroad students based in Philosophy) | |
---|---|
Autumn term: |
|
Spring term: |
|
Summer term: |
12. Attendance at an examination OR submission of assessed work through Tabula - by end of week 9 13. Attendance at a second examination OR submission of a second piece of assessed work - by end of week 9 |
*If a student does not have an eligible teaching session for a particular point, the student may instead report to the Philosophy Office to meet the specified point.
Students with visas resitting without residence who have remained in the UK
Occasionally students with visas are given permission to remain in the UK whilst on a period of resit without residence. If this applies to you, you must have a personal meeting once every 59 days – check Tabula attendance record for exact dates. If this applies to you and you cannot see the relevant monitoring points in your Tabula attendance tab, please contact PhilosophyOffice@warwick.ac.uk
If you have a student visa and wish to remain in the UK whilst resitting without residence, you must contact the Student Immigration Team for further guidance. Permission to do so cannot be sought from the Philosophy Office.
Meeting your Contact Points and what happens if you miss them
As you progress through the academic year, we will check your attendance. We require that you meet the Contact Points as listed above to make sure you are in regular attendance. An overview of attendance overall will also be kept to make sure we are aware if you are having any attendance issues.
A student who misses one or more of these points will be reported to the University, unless he or she has provided acceptable mitigating evidence to explain why the monitoring point was missed. Such evidence may include the submission of a satisfactory medical note or self-certification for illness lasting less than 1 week, an agreed extension to the deadline for a piece of assessed work, etc. Please see the Department's procedures for requesting authorised absence.
Please be aware that you will be contacted should we become concerned about your missed contact points as below:
- After each missed monitoring point you will be contacted by the Academic Office to remind you of the importance of meeting these monitoring points.
- After three Contact Points are missed someone from the Department will contact you to investigate whether you are having any problems that are preventing you from fully engaging with your course. You will normally be required to meet with either your personal tutor, the Senior Tutor or the Director of Education to discuss the reasons for your absences and to discuss strategies to improve your attendance in future. You will also receive a letter from the Academic Office.
- Students who miss six monitoring points in an academic year will receive a more strongly worded letter setting out the steps which will be taken if their attendance/submission of assessed work etc. does not improve immediately. Failure to meet the requirements of a course of study may result in a student being required to leave the University. Students subject to immigration control will additionally be required to attend an interview with the Immigration Service in the International Office.
See also Regulation 36 for further information.
International students should be particularly aware of the consequences of missing Contact Points: the Academic Office is obliged by law to report to the UK Borders Agency of the Home Office if any students have been found not to be engaging with and attending their degree course. The sponsorship of students visas can be withdrawn where students are found not be engaging with their degree course.
Other Requirements of Study
Attendance: Attendance at all lectures and seminars is compulsory and constitutes a significant part of the requirements of following a module. Poor attendance can be taken as evidence of failure to meet module requirements.
Written work: You will also be required to produce written work, as advised by the module tutor for each module. Each Philosophy module has a Moodle page which sets out clearly the precise requirements for following the module.
Essays: These will be intended to be substantial pieces of work ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 words long. Sometimes you may be asked to write shorter pieces of work of about 500 words. Essays should be submitted following the instructions noted here. Essays will be marked by tutors and returned via Tabula with a mark and written feedback. Do not be afraid to consult tutors about essays, both when you are writing them and when they have been marked. Module tutors aim to return essays within 20 working days (excluding weekends, bank holidays and period which the University is closed over the Christmas break).
Exercises (in formal logic): Weekly exercises are required in the second term’s work in Logic I in the first year. They will be returned marked and corrected. The regular submission of logic exercises is also integral to work in the modules Logic II and Logic III.
Study Abroad and Placement Years
Students normally based in the Philosophy department on a year abroad or placement year must also comply with an altered contact points scheme depending on their visa status.Monitoring Points for Study Abroad (all students) and Work Placement Year (non-visa holders only)

Students on work placement are also required to have a personal tutor meeting once per term, but these are not formal monitoring points.
