'Living a Good Life in Older Age' Symposium
This symposium has been organised by Dr Liz Barry from the English Department, who will also be speaking, along with Professor Kimberley Brownlee (Philosophy Department). Other speakers include a number of prominent age studies scholars (Margaret Morganroth Gullette, Marlene Goldman, Lucy Burke, Jan Baars and Julian C. Hughes). The symposium aims to go beyond current conceptions of 'successful ageing', to think about justice, contentment and well-being in older age. Without neglecting the biological and social aspects of later life, it will seek an historically sensitive, critical and values-based model of ageing. To this end, it will use literature, history, philosophy and medicine to think about subjective and objective perspectives on what it is to age well, even in the face of loss, illness and cognitive decline.
The symposium is free but registration is necessary. Please contact Liz Barry on e.barry@warwick.ac.uk by 7 June to secure a place. The symposium website, including paper abstracts, is here: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/english/research/researchgroups/literatureandtime/olderage
