The Department of Philosophy welcomes all new Postgraduates and we look forward to meeting you when you arrive. Please ensure you read all information on this page, which will be regularly updated between now and the start of the academic year. Therefore information is subject to change.

Postgraduate Induction Information

Tuesday 2nd October 2018

1. General Introductory Meeting for all Postgraduate Students

This is an important meeting and all new postgraduate students must attend. You will be given information relevant to your course and academic/research support available. Talks will be given on the following topics (please note talks and times are subject to change).

Tuesday 2nd October 2018, 10am - 12pm in S0.21 (Social Sciences Building).

General Introductory Meeting Schedule  

2. Lunch

Lunch with fellow students and staff will follow the general introductory meeting above from 12pm to 1pm. The lunch will be in room S2.133 (within the Economics Department). Please note this is a fairly small room with a capacity of 18 people. You are also welcome to eat lunch in the postgraduate common room in the department which is room S2.40.

3. Specific Course Induction Meetings

Students will meet course convenors time on Tuesday 2nd October 2018 as below:

MA Continental Philosophy - Tuesday 2.00-3.00pm in S0.28 (Social Sciences Building)

MA Philosophy - Tuesday 3.00-3.30pm in S0.28 (Social Sciences Building)

MA Philosophy and the Arts - Tuesday 3.30pm - 4.30pm in S1.66 (Social Sciences Building)

MPhil 2+2 - *please note amended time* Tuesday 5.00-5.30pm in S0.28 (Social Sciences Building)

4. PhD Induction Meeting for all New PhD Students

This is an important meeting which all new PhD students only must attend. You will be given information on PhD supervision, Graduate Progress Commitee (GPC) meetings and professional development to support your research.

Tuesday 2nd October 2018, 3-5pm in S2.77 (Cowling Room, Social Sciences Building).

5. Postgraduate Welcome Conference

As part of the induction activites, the Department will hold a Postgraduate Conference on the afternoon of Wednesday 3rd October from 2pm, which will comprise of talks from students and staff. This will be followed by an evening social as below. More information to follow

6. Welcome Drinks and Buffet at the Cryfield Sports Pavillion, 6.30pm onwards

The Department will be hosting an evening social event on Wednesday 3rd October from 6.30pm at the Cryfield Sports Pavillion after the Welcome Conference above. This is to provide an opportunity for new students to meet staff and current students in a more informal setting. A free buffet and alcoholic/soft drinks will be available.

Friday 19th October 2018 (week 3)

7. Professional Development Seminar

All new postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to attend the Term 1 Departmental Professional Development Workshop, which will cover professional and personal development topics such as: academic writing, library resources, course planning and literature searching. This is scheduled for Friday 19th October, 2-5pm. The full schedule will be confirmed and sent out to students in due course.

Other University Induction Events

One event which will be of interest to incoming research students is the CADRE induction event on Monday 1st October 2018 5.00-6.25pm in H0.51 (Humanities Building). CADRE (Centre for Arts Doctoral Research Excellence) provides funding, professional development, events, training and information for research students in the Arts Faculty (including the Department of Philosophy).
