Film, Q&A, and Cake - All welcome

Location: S0.19

The Violence and Social Justice cluster are really pleased to invite you to a film screening and Q+A with Prof Charlotte Heath Kelly (PAIS) and Dr Shahnaz Akhter (PAIS) on Monday 3rd June, in S0.19, from 2-4pm

The 40-minute documentary film, 'Due Regard', focuses on the impact of Prevent referrals on individuals and their families. It explores the stories of four families about whom Prevent referrals (concerning vulnerability to radicalisation) were made - by teachers, social workers, and police. Individuals often struggle to obtain information on why they have been referred, and by whom, leading to long battles with local authorities for relevant paperwork. This secrecy, alongside the racist and ableist stigmatisation that characterise most of the featured referrals, leaves deep wounds on those inappropriately referred.

After the screening, there will be a short discussion panel - allowing the audience to ask questions of the researchers.

There will also be free coffee and cake.

Come along if you are interested in questions around criminalisation, securitisation, punitivity, injustice, and the ways in which non-state actors are co-opted in the exclusionary practices of the contemporary state.

Attendance is free of charge but please register here to give us an idea of numbers.

We're looking forward to seeing you there!

All the best,

The Violence and Social Justice Cluster
