Gender and Violence

Did you know that gender-based violence is considered to be a form of gender inequality and an abuse of human rights?

This module looks at how violence is intimately connected to gender and gendered power relations and explores the significance of the link and what it means for victim survivors.

The module aims to achieve this by exploring the different forms taken by gendered violence, how it can be understood and explained and the political and policy responses to it. We will consider how gendered violence is represented in cultural forms such as novels, films and the media. We will investigate how its occurrence varies over time and in different societies. We will explore how it manifests itself on a societal scale as well as in the most intimate and private of relationships, and the effects it has on victim survivors.
