Muhammad Anwar, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Sociology, passed away in London on 11 June 2020 after a period of ill-health.He will be remembered by the generation of scholars whom he supported in their studies and his active involvement with the Pakistani and Muslim communities in Britain. |
"Professor Muhammad Anwar was a graduate of the University of Punjab, and he completed an MA at the University of Manchester, his doctoral work was at the University of Bradford. He was a founding figure in the field of social policy affecting Britain’s minority ethnic groups. He served as Head of Research at the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in the 1980s and later as director of the Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations at the University of Warwick. His Between Two Cultures (1976), Race and Politics (1986), British Pakistanis, Demographic, Social and economic position (1996) were landmark publications of their time."
Professor Virinder S Kalra
Head of Department, Sociology
"I joined Warwick just a few years before Professor Muhammad Anwar’s retirement from the University. However even before joining I was aware that his appointment as Director of Warwick’s Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations was a great coup for the University of Warwick, particularly as his previous role was Head of Research at the Commission for Racial Equality. Warwick provided the ideal home for him to both focus on academic research, and continue to have a significant impact on the national public policy debate in that in ethnic relations and racial equality. He was a member of the ‘Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain’ chaired by Lord Parekh and he was regularly sought after by politicians and the national media for his analysis of those issues. He will be much missed by everyone, from postgraduates to policy makers, who benefited from his insight and support."
