COURSEWORK FEEDBACK

PROCESS

DESCRIPTION

Process Issue(s)

The present process for giving feedback to students on their assessed work can be slow and doesn’t always give useful feedback. Student dissatisfaction with the process is reflected in National Student Survey results and the fact that only about 50% of undergraduate students currently bother to collect their feedback.

Planned Improvement

To speed up and provide uniformly high quality feedback to students on their coursework, using a simpler, more streamlined and convenient process for students, faculty and programme staff.

Benefits

  • Facilitation of fast feedback to 100% of students
  • Remote access to coursework means faculty can mark and provide feedback wherever they are
  • Marks only entered once
  • Automatic reminders to students and faculty about deadlines
  • Tracking of turnaround times
  • Secure, integrated electronic storage of all coursework, marks and feedback
  • Improved customer service reflected in National Student Survey means higher rankings in league tables

Key process changes

  • All coursework submitted electronically
  • Web-based system for accessing coursework and entering marks and feedback
  • Parallel paper-based feedback option using scanning to create electronic record
  • Personal marking schedule for faculty provided through the TAP (Teaching Allocation Planning) system
  • New process is used across all WBS programmes

Progress

  • 90% of new system completed
  • Early notice of new system sent to all faculty and programme staff
  • Final modifications to new process in October 2009
  • New coursework feedback system launched introduced WBS-wide in November 2009

Successes

  • 197 modules with a written assessment submitted online with a total of 345 assessments and 10,004 individual submissions
  • Time saved (administrative staff) - 68 hours per year
  • Time saved for markers using the system (based on 50% usage) - 172 hours per year.
