Monash Warwick Alliance Associates

The Alliance is building a stronger community of collaboration and achievement. Our new Alliance Associates initiative, part of our 2024-2027 strategy, recognises and empowers staff and students who are actively involved in the Alliance, including those who have received MWA funding for their project or are part of our joint PhD programme. Alliance Associates will be critical ambassadors promoting awareness, fostering engagement with MWA opportunities, and joining a thriving network of MWA champions.

Professor Michael Scott, University of Warwick Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) and Alliance Academic Director said:

The Monash Warwick Alliance has been a beacon of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation for over twelve years, empowering our communities to make significant strides in education, research, and global leadership.

Our new strategy and the launch of our Associate members initiative marks the next chapter in our partnership, further strengthening our collective efforts to tackle the world's most pressing challenges and fostering a vibrant, inclusive community that thrives on collaboration to make a lasting impact.

Prof. Sebastien Perrier

Chemistry

My joint position between Warwick Chemistry and Medical School and Monash Pharmacy has provided unique opportunities in our research at the bio-nano interface, also providing a solid ground for the training of early career researchers.

Dr Rebecca Morris

Education Studies

Working closely with colleagues in the Faculty of Education at Monash, we are investigating the possibilities for UK-Australia comparative studies as a way of exploring the teacher shortages that both nations are experiencing. Our collaborative research seeks to examine and tackle some of the methodological challenges connected to understanding teacher shortage, with a specific focus on learning more about how to attract a more diverse teacher workforce into the classroom.

Economics

The Monash Warwick Alliance played an important part of my PhD studies at the University of Warwick. Using support from the alliance, in 2020 we launched the Applied Young Economist Webinar with colleagues from Monash, a platform for early-career economists to present their research to a global audience. In 2023, I was also able to visit Monash University using funding from the MWA PhD Travel Grant. This gave me the opportunity to interact with faculty and students working on similar topics as I was preparing my thesis. Neither of these would have been possible without the support from the MWA, for which I will always be

grateful.

The Monash Warwick Alliance funding has been instrumental in the success of the AYEW webinar series, enabling us to create a global platform for PhD students to present their research, receive feedback, and connect with peers. Launched during the pandemic by Ashani and Ivan, under the guidance of Professors Sascha Becker and Paul Raschky, the series quickly gained momentum and continues to thrive. I’ve been fortunate to contribute to its success, collaborating with PhD students from both Monash (Patrick and Alireza) and Warwick (Carole).

Co-organizing these series since my second year of MRes has expanded my exposure to diverse research, broadened my professional network, and enriched my own work. The support from the Alliance has not only facilitated the creation of a global platform for PhD students but also nurtured my own professional development.

Philosophy

Being part of the Monash Warwick Alliance has deeply enriched my academic journey, allowing me to navigate between two vibrant intellectual cultures. With supervisors across philosophy, and modern languages, my interdisciplinary research into French Philosophy and Literature thrives on diverse perspectives. The opportunity to attend conferences across the UK and Europe while based at Warwick has expanded my scholarly network and given me fresh insights into ongoing contemporary debates. Meanwhile, my time in Australia is offering a contrasting academic environment that enhances my critical approach and independence. This transnational collaboration pushes me to refine my ideas continuously, while also building a uniquely global academic profile.

Prof. Lena Rethel

Politics and International Studies

Working with colleagues from Monash Australia and Malaysia on the MWA I-PEEL pedagogic project was a great experience and has helped to forge closer links with wonderful colleagues.

Prof. Elliot Ludvig

Psychology

The MWA funding kickstarted a new line of research in my lab on the psychology of cash-out betting, including conference presentations, a published paper in a prominent journal, and a new PhD student who started in Oct 2024.

Dr Guido van Meersbergen

History

The Monash Warwick Alliance laid the basis for an international collaborative project aimed at producing a critical text edition of the embassy diaries of Sir William Norris kept during his diplomatic mission to Mughal India (1699-1702). Starting with reciprocal visits between Warwick and Monash in 2018-2019, the team now consists of members in the UK, Australia, and the US. The ability to establish working arrangements through intensive in-person meetings at the outset equipped us with a firm foundation for working collaboratively across time zones and institutions..

Student Opportunity

I have enjoyed every step of the journey of working with colleagues from Monash Australia and Malaysia over the past five years, as we've collaboratively developed and evolved the TeaMWork virtual student project programme.

Being part of the Alliance has expanded my perspective, providing me with invaluable insights from diverse viewpoints, whilst enabling continuous learning and enhancing the quality of the TeaMWork experience for students, staff and organisations.

It has felt like being part of a friendly, welcoming team – worth the early morning calls! We have lots of conversations about the weather – as they sit in the warmth in their summer, whilst its winter in the UK and vice versa!.

Dr Umar Boodoo

Warwick Business School

The MWA Activation Fund facilitated my collaboration with colleagues beyond Warwick Business School who share an interest in similar research areas. Utilizing this fund, we organized workshops in both Australia and the UK. This initiative has fostered a robust partnership among us, and we are now considering applying for additional funding to pursue impactful research.

Prof. Kate Owen

Warwick Medical School

Thanks to Monash Warwick Alliance education grant funding we have been able to integrate compassion training for health professionals into our medical student curriculum. We are doing a large mixed methods evaluation with the team at Monash medical school and are currently writing up our results. The good news is that the compassion training is now an ongoing feature of our curriculum.

Javier Garcia Martinez

Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies

My experience with the Monash Warwick Alliance Joint PhD has been outstanding. I’ve had the privilege to connect with world-leading academics from both the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies at the University of Warwick and Monash University's Art, Design and Architecture, and School of Social Sciences. The interdisciplinary perspectives I’ve encountered have significantly enriched my research on people’s lived experiences with SSRI antidepressants. This has been an incredibly rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, one that I would highly recommend to anyone..

Dr Lukasz Walasek

Psychology

I was fortunate to receive support from two Monash Warwick Alliance funds, both of which helped us establish a new network of applied research focused on decision-making, impulsivity, and gambling behaviour. This work sparked a new wave of research into the psychological mechanisms of problem gambling, providing valuable evidence that continues to shape discussions around new gambling regulations in the UK and Australia. Today, with the establishment of the Warwick Gambling Research Lab (WaGR), the network continues to expand, bringing together multidisciplinary teams of scientists dedicated to developing interventions that mitigate gambling-related harm worldwide.

Tom Howe

Politics

My PhD project, which explores post-Brexit British foreign policy, UK-Australia relations, and the geopolitics of the Anglosphere, was made possible through the support of the Monash-Warwick Alliance. The Alliance has given me access to extensive resources and expertise whilst also facilitating workshops on the Anglosphere that connected academics from the UK and Australia. Moreover, while in Australia, I’ve had the opportunity to share my analysis of British politics on leading radio and TV channels, including the ABC and Sky News. These opportunities have significantly contributed to my professional development and greatly expanded my network. I highly recommend that any prospective PhD student consider pursuing a project through the Monash-Warwick Alliance.

Dr Adam Thomas

Mathematics

My first experience with the Alliance has been to jointly supervise a PhD student with a colleague in Monash. We discussed it when meeting at an international conference and the application process was straightforward.

The student is now into their final year and the whole experience has been very positive. I am going to visit Monash in February 2025 to continue exploring collaborative oppurtunites with the group over there.
