Phishing Emails

We continue to be targeted by phishing emails – attempts to gather personal information by fraudulent means. Phishing emails can generally be identified as:

  • They contain no personal information relating to you i.e. they start Dear Customer
  • They contain unusual and incorrect spelling and grammar
  • The offer is ‘too good to be true’ – e.g. you have won a lottery you never entered.

Recent Increase in SPAM & Phishing Emails

As you may have noticed, there has been an increase in the amount of SPAM and phishing emails being received. This is partly due to the number of "successful" phishes over the last few months, which has led to more people targeting Warwick. The recent move of student email is also being used as an opportunity to target us.

While we do tweak the SPAM filters as much as we can, we are unable to set them much higher as experience has shown we would block genuine emails, this would obviously be unacceptable. However, we are in the process of investigating alternative solutions which we anticipate will provide more effective filtering.

One of the main causes of SPAM & phishing emails is compromised accounts, where username and passwords have been revealed. Please note that IT Services will NEVER ask you for this information by email.

Advice on how to spot phishing emails is available online, together with examples of recent phishing attempts. If you suspect you have received a phishing email, you can report it to us at report dot spam at warwick dot ac dot uk

Internal Emails being delivered to Junk

There have been reports that some internal email is being delivered to the 'Junk' folder rather than the Inbox.  This is as a result of a local setting on the Outlook client, rather than any central filtering. To avoid this happening again, you can either

  1.  Add @warwick addresses to your ‘Safe Sender’ List -  in Outlook click 'Tools' , 'Options', 'Junk E-mail', 'Safe Senders', 'Add', Type in '@warwick.ac.uk'
  2. Change the Junk Email setting to be 'No Automatic Filtering' -  in Outlook click on 'Tools', 'Options' then 'Junk E-mail' and selecting the appropriate option.

Email coming into the University is still filtered centrally.

Hoax Email

A number of staff have received emails supposedly from HMRC Tax Credits claiming they are due a refund of credits. The email is requesting card details in order to make a refund payment directly to the employee's bank account. Please note this is a scam email and should be deleted immediately. A majority of the emails have been received via the Payroll resource account and have been deleted accordingly. HMRC do not communicate using emails and staff should be aware of this when receiving such emails.

Please contact the Payroll team if you have any queries or concerns on ext 74444 or email Payroll@warwick.ac.uk
